Alzheimer's disease - a continuum of or contributed to by normal ageing?
Author(s)Gordon Wilcock
Journal titleAlzheimer's Research, vol 1, no 2, 2 August 1995
Pagespp 61-65
KeywordsDementia ; Ageing process ; Diseases.
AnnotationThe author presents some of the evidence indicating that Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a pathological process that is at least in part distinct from the varied pathology of normal ageing. This article covers epidemiological evidence, twin studies, neuropathological findings, biochemical differences between AD and normal ageing, and the heterogeneity of AD. The author's own personal belief is that AD represents the final pathway of a number of disease processes, some - but not necessarily all - of which may contribute to what we now call AD; and that "normal ageing processes" may themselves have a role to play in some individuals.
