AnnotationThis article examines some of the main barriers facing, and the dilemmas involved in, the provision of community services for older people with learning difficulties, and reports the findings of recent research into how their needs are being recognised and met by service providers. It concludes that ageist attitudes and policies in service provision restrict the extent to which older people with learning difficulties are able to benefit from support that their younger counterparts may receive following discharge from long-stay hospital care into the community.
