AnnotationDrawing on data from the Social Change and Economic Life Initiative survey, this paper examines gender differences in attitudes to employment in the later part of life among over 2,500 British women and men aged between 40 and 59. In particular, it investigates whether the decline in women's employment in midlife can be explained by a change in attitudes with age, or by age-related barriers in the labour market. It concludes that women's early exit from the labour market is not due to a reduced desire for employment with age, but that perceived barriers to employment and promotion may affect behaviours and attitudes.
