Annotation | This paper sets out a theoretical framework to link modernisation-related factors to the major problems related to ageing in Korean society: poverty and economic dependence; difficulties in health and health care; role loss; and social psychological conflicts and feelings of alienation. It examines factors affecting family structure and functions, and considers the needs of older Koreans and the existing social welfare provision. It concludes that the challenges of population ageing could speed up the building of the welfare state, and recommends a modernisation of the values of filial piety, which have acted as a barrier to the development of old age social welfare policies in Korea. |
