Annotation | Verbatim transcripts of 20 nursing admission interviews are analysed for the communication patterns used by nurses when interacting with older patients in acute care hospital settings. Findings indicated that misperception of speech events represented an important source of conflict in the relationship. Task-oriented communication approaches most often resulted in failure to explore an older patient's psychosocial needs. (RH). |
