AnnotationThis is the first book to systematically explore the geography of poverty in the UK, in rural and urban areas. It explains how the North-South divide continues to exist, despite the 1990s recession. There is also a `Celtic divide' in the distribution of poverty, with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland suffering disproportionately high levels of deprivation. Poverty also exists within seemingly better-off areas such as the South-East, and in high-tech working environments where rich work alongside poor. The relationship between health and poverty and its relevance for health poverty is also considered. The policy implications of these findings are summarised. (RH).
