| Annotation | This series began in 1970 as an annual, but since 1979 has been published every other year. The title changed with 1989-based projections from: "Population projections" to "National population projections". The primary purpose of the series is to provide an estimate of the future population of the United Kingdom (and of its constituent countries) as a common framework for use in national planning in a number of different fields. Series includes a set of variants showing results of making different assumptions on future mortality and fertility from those adopted in the principal projections. (These variant projections are nos. 6, 14 and 19 to date). Data has been available in microfiche format from 1979 but ceased in 2000, and additionally as a floppy disk from 1991 to 2000. All data is now freely available online at the website. On 31 January 2006, the function of producing national population projections on behalf of the three Registrars General was transferred from the Government Actuary's Department (GAD) to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The 2006-based national population projections were, therefore, the first to be carried out by the ONS in consultation with the General Register Office for Scotland, the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, and the Welsh Assembly Government Statistical Directorate.
