AnnotationConstraints on public expenditure, combined with a shift away from state welfarism, has resulted in volunteering taking on a higher political profile than at any time since the 1960s. To assess the capacity of the voluntary sector to take on new roles, the Volunteer Centre UK decided to initiate this major national survey, which was carried out by Social and Community Planning Research (SCPR) and funded by the Nuffield Foundation and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF). The survey covers the extent and different types of voluntary activity, the characteristics of volunteers, the organisation of voluntary workers, and benefits and drawbacks of volunteering. (RH).
