AnnotationThe late 1980s and early 1990s have witnessed rapid changes in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union (USSR). This report provides an overview of the populations in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet republics: the size and trends of the elderly portion of these populations; the factors determining the rates at which the populations are ageing; health indicators and social characteristics of older people; and the economic implications of ageing populations. Reference is made to the quality and scarcity of some data; however, we can be more certain about projected size of the older population. The report was supported and prepared under the auspices of the Office of Demography of Aging, National Institute on Aging. (RH).
