'I don't feel old' : subjective ageing and the search for meaning in later life | Author(s) | Paul Thompson |
Journal title | Ageing and Society, vol 12, part 1, March 1992 |
Pages | pp 23-48 |
Keywords | Ageing process ; Life span ; Memory and Reminiscence ; Life satisfaction. |
Annotation | Offers a critique of the study of ageing by sociologists and historians, and claims that life histories and oral histories have been neglected in gerontology. As a corrective, results from a UK life history based study are presented. This highlights four ways in which older adults achieve positive self-perceptions and meaning in old age: work, leisure, grandparenting and intimate relations among adults. (KJ). |
