Annotation | The purpose of special wheelchair housing is to enable disabled people to live independently in the community, and, by incorporating appropriate design features, to minimise their disability as much as possible. This study of 249 people living in 69 schemes was designed to find out how successful the dwellings are in fulfilling their purpose, and to provide information for those concerned with the design of such dwellings. The focus of the study was on three interrelated areas: the type of dwellings needed and the detailed design; the type of disabled person to whom a dwelling is allocated; and some of the social aspects of housing disabled people.
