Annotation | This chapter examines some of the issues involved in the care of the older person with mental disorders in relation to wider aspects of ageing. It outlines psychiatric syndromes affecting older people: neurosis, alcohol abuse, affective illness, paranoid illness, and organic disorders (dementias). The organisation of psychiatric services, the treatment and management of psychiatric problems, training, and research are summarised. The participation of a variety of professional workers is required, to understand the aetiology of psychiatric illnesses in older people, and to play a role in the provision of services - which also require resources for the adequate treatment and care of patients.
