Annotation | The growth of private residential accommodation for older people is a marked national trend in Britain and it has also become locally concentrated. This paper reviews recent developments in the private residential care sector, focusing on findings from a detailed survey of private residential care homes in Devon. The geographical origin of residents are more restricted than sometimes supposed and homes do not seem to be an immediate factor in the migration of older people. The background of the proprietors of the homes is investigated, highlighting the nature of homes as "family businesses". The article concludes with an outline of trends and possible developments in the private residential care sector. (AKM). |
