Annotation | There have been a number of methods for defining the needs levels of older people suitable for surveys or planning purposes. Two general methods predominate: one which calculates a score on the basis of an older person's characteristics, which is intended to serve as an indicator of priority of service intervention; the other divides older people into a small number of groups which should be regarded as homogeneous with respect to their need for service intervention. Eleven definitions are reproduced in this paper, which are related to one another in a number of cases, and all owe much to the pioneering work of Townsend in considering older people's social needs.
