| Annotation | Estimates suggest that only one fifth of those who need accommodation in "sheltered housing" actually live in such developments in England and Wales, and indicates the extent of the problem of providing additional housing suited to the needs of older people. Illustrated in this article are two schemes which won a commendation and an award respectively in the 1975 Department of the Environment (DOE) Housing Awards: at Basildon New Town in Essex, and the Medway Towns in Kent.
