Annotation | Evidence is presented of inequalities in health found among communities in different areas of the north of England. This evidence is related to long-term trends taking place in patterns of health in Britain as a whole. The authors explore how far health inequalities can be explained by variations in material deprivation, by documenting health differences for 678 electoral wards. Results indicate gross inequalities between populations living only a few miles apart. The authors conclude that the scientific and political establishment are not taking the evidence that material deprivation accounts for major variations in health outcomes (including premature mortality) sufficiently seriously.
