Annotation | Geriatric health care services have expanded and developed as the proportion of older people has steadily increased, and as the perceptions regarding the health needs of this sector of the community have changed. This chapter traces the historical development of geriatric health services from mainly institutionalised care at the beginning of the 20th century to recent times with much more emphasis being placed on community based care and rehabilitation. Various approaches to valuation are reviewed, including 'misplacement', assessment of met and unmet needs, variation in services, and measurement of output and the process of care. (OFFPRINT).
