Elderly alcoholics in the Edinburgh psychiatric services | Author(s) | K J B Rix |
Journal title | Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, vol 75, March 1982 |
Pages | pp 177-80 |
Keywords | Alcoholism ; Social surveys ; Edinburgh. |
Annotation | 31 elderly alcoholics diagnosed in the Edinburgh psychiatric service during a 5-month period were interviewed and compared with 30, sex-matched young alcoholics. The two groups were very similar, except in terms of diagnosis of chronic organic brain disease, and the few differences may reflect age or generational differences. It is suggested that elderly alcoholics, with the exception of those with organic brain disease, may be treated in general psychiatry and specialist alcoholism services with younger alcoholics.
