Annotation | The papers in this volume examine the evidence for and against looking after chronic psychiatric patients in non-hospital environments. They relate the outcome of investigations and research into alternatives to hospital, including day centres, hostels, group homes, boarding-houses and substitute family care. They also examine the role of local authorities and the voluntary sector in such schemes. The papers are presented in the belief that their findings demonstrate the validity of aspirations contained in 'The hospital plan for England and Wales' (Cmnd 1604; HMSO, 1962); and in the conviction that 'we need to revive the interest in meeting the needs of long-term patients in ways which are challenging and satisfying for both staff and patients, and which integrates such care with that of shorter stay patients' (Better services for the mentally ill (Cmnd 6233; HMSO, 1975).
