Annotation | Following on from his first article on why dependency surveys are commissioned and how caution should be exercised in using results, the author looks at how dependency is conceived and measured. He considers that the concept has to be disaggregated before appropriate measures can be devised, whilst emphasising its value as a holistic concept concerned with relationships rather than attributes. Different surveys are reviewed to assess the reliability and validity of the measures used. The article concludes with model questions which could be used to measure different elements of dependency.
