Annotation | Anticoagulant drugs reduce the morbidity and mortality from venous and arterial thrombotic disease, especially in older patients who have the highest risk. The benefits are not offset by an increased risk of bleeding. It should be noted that this article is accompanied by editorial comment, that clear evidence on the ratio of risk to benefit of long term oral treatment with anticoagulant drugs in older patients is lacking.
