Annotation | The purpose of the Committee's enquiry was to consider the need for change in the present pension age and retirement age system. This arose from an awareness of a growing demand for the state male pension age to be lowered to ease the unemployment situation, and of a growing movement towards early retirement. The report describes the present situation and assumptions about future developments. It considers the principles on which to found a new found pension age system, considers the options, and includes proposals for a new system. The Committee recommends a scheme of flexible pension age based on a new notional common pension age of 63. It also calls for phased retirement schemes, and for giving more publicity to, and making more attractive, alternatives such as job-sharing and part-time work. (RH). |
