Annotation | Three national charities offering support to carers - the Carers' National Association, Contact-a-Family, and Crossroads - wanted to look in some detail at the help available to carers in London, and how that care could be increased. This survey was conducted with funding from the City Parochial Foundation. Brent, Ealing, Harrow and Hillingdon were selected, because they were adjacent, multi-racial and multi-cultural, and a mix of inner and outer London boroughs. This report comprises Part 1 of the study, and includes comments of some of the 300 and more carers interviewed. The report concentrates on gaps in services, and outlines the community care plan and care needs of each borough: all four recommend a voluntary sector project to tackle the needs identified by carers. Given the complexities of the NHS and Community Care Act 1990, the author doubts whether the voluntary or private sectors would be in a position to provide services to the extent envisaged by the Act.
