Annotation | A quarter of working people aged 55+ with a health condition is considering leaving work. Health is the most important factor affecting older workers' decisions to stop working before reaching state pension age, as employers are not properly supporting older workers with health conditions. This report finds that early access to support, small adjustments to the workplace and working patterns, and empathetic management are crucial to enabling people to manage their health at work and to remain in employment. Research for this report was commissioned to inform the design of Greater Manchester's Working Well Early Help programme. It considers issues such as disclosure (which can also be a driver of stress), and access to and availability of support. Quite small changes can make a significant difference to an individual's ability manage health condition and to continue to work. Changes are needed both to government policy and employer practice.
