AnnotationPeople over the age of 50 now make up a significant proportion of the UK population. Transitions in this age group are increasingly complex, with work-based identities running alongside, or being interchanged with leisure, caring, volunteering, and related activities. This report provides a detailed overview of the various transitions affecting people in their fifties and beyond. The report challenges calls for an upward revision of retirement ages, arguing that paid employment is neither a feasible nor an attractive option for an increasing proportion of women and men moving into their fifties and beyond. This report is part of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) research programme, Transitions after 50, which was established to explore people's experiences, decisions and constraints as they pass from active participation in the labour market towards a new identity in later life.
