Annotation | Functional foods are defined in this report as "conventional food products modified in some way to give a health benefit above and beyond basic nutrition". Three case studies were undertaken to consider whether functional foods have a role in supporting older people's health and nutrition. First, the strongest health benefits of probiotic yogurts and drinks were found in preventing and treating antibiotic associated diarrhoea (AAD). Second, the case is made for cholesterol-lowering functional foods, plant sterol or stanol containing margarines (e.g. Benecol and Flora). The third considers the importance of calcium and vitamin D for bone health. The study includes a literature review; looks at the specific nutritional needs of older people living independently in the community; and examines the evidence between current dietary recommendations for older people. The report was made possible by Danone. (RH). |
