Annotation | To participate in the Indigenous Skills Transfer Exchange Partnership (INSTEP) in Australia, older volunteers require preparatory training before being placed in a selected community project in a remote indigenous community. Organisational discussions suggested that there was a need for changes in the training programme if these older adults were to be fully prepared and to have maximum opportunities to enhance personal self-esteem and dignity, focus their sense of purpose, and be able to facilitate self-determination in indigenous communities. A review of the training programme was undertaken, beginning with an analysis of educational gerontology principles. The purpose was to derive recommendations that would promote the development of these older volunteers through learning activities. Comments from a consultant on reconciliation tourism and feedback from volunteers, community members and INSTEP stakeholders were obtained. The article critically considers the recommendations reached in the review, which included improvement of content relevance, selection of strategies that supported personal transformation and design of learning tasks consistent with the biological, psychological and social needs of older learners. The article concludes with a discussion of opportunities for further gerontological research among culturally diverse groups of older people, particularly where development of cultural sensitivity is a primary learning goal.
