AnnotationA holistic investigation into the ageing process is described, in which three areas of inquiry are explored: language and communication abilities in old age; identity in old age; and social values and practices in old age. The method of analysis used is discourse analysis, guided by Labov's theoretical framework of natural narrative, and Erikson's theory of personality development, via observation and interviewing. Contrary to other research findings in the literature of discourse and ageing, the narrative of the older people in this investigation of 20 residents in a Lebanese nursing home proved to be linguistically and communicatively densely packed, regardless of differences in chronological age. Moreover, the cultural context of each older person earlier in life, served either to empower or constrain the identity, that was subsequently mirrored in discourse in old age. The study found that the majority of the older people interviewed conveyed, communicated discourse with similar coherence between social values and social practices. The article concludes by considering implications for conceptions of learning in later life and future research on the subject. (RH).
