Annotation | Geriatricians should start introducing themselves to fifty-somethings, to help them age well and to combat the widespread negative image of older people. This was the massage from Baroness Sally Greengross to the British Geriatrics Society's Autumn Conference. This report outlines other contributions, including from Roger Wong on 'Improving acute care for older people: lessons from Canada'. Irene Burns (of Leeds General Infirmary) pointed to delays in discharge from hospital to intermediate care of even a couple of days leading to loss of conditioning, mobility, weight and cognition, and therefore to increasing frailty. Other themes covered included the importance of prescribing exercise (the best medicine), the problems of loneliness and depression, and causes of chronic pain. The meeting at ExCel London also marked the 70th anniversary of the BGS. (RH). |
