AnnotationThe London Thames Gateway Dance Partnership commissioned Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music's Dance Science Department to conduct this literature review. The aim was to produce a descriptive review of research which investigated the physiological and psychological impacts of dance among older populations. A comprehensive search for literature used general and scholarly databases, including library and archive resources. Source materials include books, articles in journals, newspapers and magazines, evaluation reports, TV documentaries, and video footage from research studies. Styles of dance examined range from traditional to aerobic and exercise dance, also dance therapy. Topics covered include general fitness and strength, balance and gait, general psychological well-being (including self-confidence), social inclusion, and cognitive function. Populations assessed range from age 50+, and include both healthy and physically and/or psychologically impaired cohorts. The review highlights reported successes of dance projects, the potential benefits of dance, and points to areas for further research. (RH).
