AnnotationIn his research for 'The last refuge: a survey of residential institutions and homes for the aged in England and Wales' (1962), Peter Townsend visited 173 public, voluntary and private residential care homes for older people. The authors re-use Townsend's data (archived at the University of Essex), to trace the subsequent history of these homes; they also re-use their own data collected in 2006. Their book aims to examine continuity and change in residential care for older people over the last 50 years, and future care of older people in the UK. In Part I, they examine the changing contexts of care, the reasons for revisiting 'The last refuge', and their study design and methods. Part II reports their findings on what kinds of homes have survived and which ones closed, also the circumstances of residents and staff. They use qualitative data collected at the 20 homes revisited to look at living environments, daily lives, and quality of care in the homes. Part III includes discussion of working with older 'volunteer' researchers, social care in the 21st century, and de-stigmatising residential care. The book is based on research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC; RES-000-23-0995). (RH). also, how old age is researched. the importance of longitudinal research
