Annotation | What is the best way to implement person-centred end of life care for people with dementia? The authors describe the development of "comfort care plans", which involved a partnership between Northumberland County Behaviour Support Service (NCBSS) and HospiceCare North Northumberland. They used the Newcastle Model (developed by Ian James) to support the development of the concept of comfort as a need to be met with a personalised care plan constructed around this need. Maslow's hierarchy of needs provided a structure to ensure that physical needs as well as emotional needs were identified and met. A case study illustrates how a comfort care plan works in practice.
