AnnotationThe researchers investigated public attitudes as to how inheritance should be dealt with in law, both when a will is made and in cases of intestacy (where someone dies without making a will). Funded by the Nuffield Foundation, this study was conducted to inform a review of the law of intestacy by the Law Commission for England and Wales. The findings show that the current law largely reflects public attitudes, but that on key issues such as the entitlement of cohabitants, the intestacy rules may need updating. The study involved an attitudinal survey of 1556 adults across England and Wales, and 30 qualitative in-depth interviews.
