Annotation | In this report for Help the Aged and TAEN - The Age and Employment Network, the authors review evidence on the effects on older men of work on health in later life. They examine six key themes: older men and the labour market; the changing nature of work and its impact on older men; the link between gender, health and work; work, family life and health; work-caused and work-related ill health; and promoting health in the workplace. The authors found a lack of research on the effects of work on older people's health, and little empirical evidence on the cumulative effect of working lives on men's (or women's) health as they age. Longitudinal research and pilot projects are needed to develop the evidence base. Three main themes emerge from the review: the central role of work in the lives and identity of men; their occupational histories in relation to work-related and work-caused ill health have consequences for life expectancy and chronic disease in old age; and targeting health promotion towards men.
