Annotation | Better housing for older people could improve social cohesion and reduce the strain on public services. Rohan Banerjee talks to Conservative MP Heidi Allen, housing expert Maria Brenton and architect Sarah Wigglesworth about how this can be achieved. Issues discussed include that good quality housing is key to good health: poor quality housing puts a strain on the NHS. Projects such as Older Women's Co-Housing Network (OWCH) which provides shared accommodation prevents social isolation. Designing for Wellbeing in Environment in Later Life (Dwell) is a partnership between the University of Sheffield and Sarah Wigglesworth, who has thought about the importance of consulting older residents about what they would like to see in their housing and neighbourhoods - which need to be age-friendly.
