AnnotationThere has been no national policy relating to older prisoners, and the onus has been on prison governors to make whatever provision. This good practice guide is based on work with four prisons (HMPs Manchester, Stafford, North Sea Camp, and Kirkham) on a project funded by the National Offender Management Service (NOMS), which was designed "to assess the need and ability of prisons and approved premises to adapt their regimes to meet the needs of older offenders". It provides examples of best practice that have been developed, and "top tips" on: age-friendly reception and induction; older prisoner forums; physical environment; procedures for locating ground floor cells and bottom bunks; day centre provision; workshops; education; purposeful and physical activity; buddy support workers; older prisoner policy; and staff training. Another section reviews personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs), which aim to ensure disabled residents' health, safety and well-being in the event of an emergency evacuation. (RH).
