Keywords | Prisoners ; Needs [elderly] ; Prison ; Institutional accommodation ; Standards of provision. |
Annotation | There are some 12,700 older offenders (age 50+) comprising 15% of the prison population in England and Wales. This good practice guide is based on work with two Approved Premises and their work with offenders after release from prison, noting problems such as poor mobility and self-esteem, and access to pensions and benefits. It aims to provide insight into how to adapt practice to make living in Approved Premises suitable for an ageing population, by providing information on: older resident consultation; accommodating older people; age-friendly induction and referral; day centre provision; developing access to education for older prisoners; purposeful activity; older resident champions; and staff training. Another section reviews personal emergency evacuation plans (PEEPs), which aim to ensure disabled residents' health, safety and well-being in the event of an emergency evacuation. (RH). |
