Annotation | Encouraging people to work longer has become a key objective for public policy. This commentary outlines a critical assessment of current government policy towards older workers and how they are treated. It highlights the distinction between a 'fuller' and an 'extended' working life; and notes the importance of separating out different groups within the category 'older worker'. It identifies areas for action to support those now facing working into their 60s and beyond. The paper identifies problems implementing policy of extending working lives. It suggests that extending work is unlikely to be achieved without ensuring greater security for older workers, and highlights the importance of developing more support for older workers. (RH). |
