Annotation | The assumption is that a daughter should care for an ageing parent, as portrayed in paintings such as George Elgar Hicks' 1862 painting 'Women's Mission: Comfort of Old Age' in Tate Britain. The author of this article states that she used to be judged for not giving up work to care for her children. Now, she is called selfish for not caring for her 93-year-old mother. She discusses other people's attitudes to employing of carers, and observes that politicians' solution to the social care system is the family. The maintaining of fulfilling relationships between ageing parents and adult children is just as important as whether or not this is also an ongoing caring relationship. (RH). |
