AnnotationThe focus of this paper relates to raising awareness and understanding in relation to nurses caring for people living with dementia, the first theme of 'Living well with dementia: a National Dementia Strategy' (Department of Health, 2009). The author considers the challenges posed by dementia, and provides a critical review of the literature as to whether nurses are effectively trained to appropriately manage the care of people with dementia. While the literature examined indicates positive steps in improving dementia care, the general picture suggests that the nursing workforce is not sufficiently prepared to manage dementia care as effectively as it could: there is a need to ensure that nurses at the pre-and post-registration level are better equipped to deal with the challenges of dementia.
