AnnotationA frequent concern of older people and of those who work with older people is that research is often divorced from reality and does not inform everyday practice. This special issue of Working with Older People aims to provide a forum for researchers, policy makers and practitioners, to discuss particular initiatives and topics relevant to people as they age. Pairs of articles examine three overarching themes. The first, is on ageing identities: advance decisions and issues of autonomy; and how an adaptation coping model developed in the Netherlands can be applied to a UK context, to help people and their carers living with dementia to adjust to change. The second concerns ageing lifestyles: the development of policies designed to enhance quality of life; and the prevention of cognitive decline and dementia. The third relates to ageing in place: the character of home and community support, based on an empirical study from Canada; and discretionary mobility and how older people feel about restrictions on their mobility.
