AnnotationThis report provides an overview of past trends and projected growth in the older adult population in six industrialised countries: Canada, France, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and United States. The report discusses the main changes that have occurred as this growth took place and the implications for the future, particularly in respect of economic growth and the productivity of older age groups, and their economic resources and well-being. The report concludes with a discussion of the challenges ahead, and of the need for better data to meet them effectively. The assistance is acknowledged of Robert B Friedland and the staff of the National Academy on Aging, who gathered the data and prepared earlier drafts of the report. (RH).
