| Annotation | This annual report has been published by the Chief Medical Officer for almost every year since 1858, when the post was established. They provide a record of the nation's health and the major challenges faced by government in tackling the main problems. The 2001 edition under the auspices of Sir Liam Donaldson, as Chief Medical Officer, is the first one published since 1997, in a new format and markedly less detailed, highlighting only the major problems and calling for action. Thereafter, annual reports will focus on specific topics.
