Annotation | There are some 820,000 people with dementia in the UK (both diagnosed and undiagnosed). Evidence suggests that diagnosis is important, but the UK's record is poor (estimate of 41% of those with dementia diagnosed) compared to other countries. This report seeks to answer the four research questions. First, are there benefits to early diagnosis of dementia? Second, how does the UK's diagnosis performance compare internationally; and how does England perform compared to the UK devolved administrations? Third, what are the patient and professional barriers to early diagnosis? Lastly, what policies could improve the earlier diagnosis of dementia in England? The authors draw on in-depth interviews with people with Alzheimer's and their carers; and the research reported identifies the barriers to early diagnosis, from a patient and professional perspective. The new policies proposed aim to better incentivise the health system to diagnose dementia earlier. (RH) |
