Annotation | There are some 5.5 million people with dementia in Europe; yet despite its high prevalence (2% of those aged 65-69, but some 22% of 85-89 year olds), awareness of dementia is low. This report aims to help promote an intergenerational approach to dementia, beginning with some key facts. It describes the role that the family plays as well as the impact of dementia on the entire family. The authors look at some successful initiatives across Europe, in which different generations work together to lessen the burden of dementia in their communities. They propose ways in which all generations may be supported as they cope with dementia within their families. The report is based on a workshop held in June 2006 at the European Social Services Conference in. Vienna. (RH) |
