Annotation | In the United States in 1981, there were 8,853 state and federal prisoners age 55+. In 2012, that number stood at 124,900; and by 2030 it is projected that there will be more than 400,000 -. which may be more than one-third of prisoners in the US. Thus, the older prison population is expected to increase by 4,400% over this time span. This report examines the demographic and cost consequences of an ageing prison population, which is the fastest growing cohort in the US. It recommends short-term reforms, and suggests a rethink on sentencing policies, including parole practices. (RH) |
