Annotation | The Open University and Loughborough University conducted a research project funded by the New Dynamics of Ageing Programme (NDA), to study people's lives in relation to the kitchen. The Transitions in Kitchen Living (TiKL project examined experiences of the kitchen across the life course for older people living in a variety of accommodation including private houses, flats and sheltered apartments, where kitchen space depends on housing type. Following pilot research, a sample of 48 people in their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s living in Bristol and Loughborough participated. Each person was interviewed twice: first about their "kitchen history", while the second examined and discussed their current kitchen, how well it was suited to their abilities and needs, and the coping strategies they adopted to overcome any problems using it. This guide summaries the research project's findings. It offers advice for making kitchens easier to use for older people on issues such as reaching and bending, layout and co-location, sitting down to work, lighting, flooring, laundry, recycling and pets. It is being distributed to older peoples' groups, the retail sector, the third sector, policymakers, BSI and designers. (RH). |
