Annotation | Shelter and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) commissioned the New Policy Institute to carry out a market assessment of older people's housing in England, covering both specialist retirement developments and mainstream housing suitable for people aged 55 and over. In response, this study addresses three broad groups of questions relating to: choice availability and affordability; quality of life; and market impacts. The focus is on older people only households, and looks at current and future provision of housing for older people. It shows that the traditional perception of housing for older people is at odds with how older people actually live. The population of older people is expected to increase by around 40% by 2033, from 9.3 million to 13 million. To meet this demand, developers and policy makers will need to broaden their ideas of what older people actually look for in housing. (RH). |
