Annotation | Nursing homes are sometimes the best option for people with advanced dementia, but what is it like choosing one? The authors report on their qualitative study of family caregiver experiences, in which they examined an 18-bed specialist long-term dementia unit that provided 24-hour care in north-west England. They conducted interviews with 12 family caregivers, most of whom had been instrumental in placing relatives with advanced stage dementia in the care home. Their study considered the extent to which caregivers could be perceived as "inspectors" in selecting a care hone for their relative, and the importance of considering dignity in their decisions.
