AnnotationThe impact of a three year Big Lottery funded project, Opening Doors in Central London (Camden, Hackney, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, and Westminster), is explored. The project ran from 2008-2010 and was intended for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older people. This first report presents findings of an evaluation conducted over a six month period, July-December 2009, which also sought service users' views and to inform other similar projects across the country. The evaluation findings cover who the project has reached; isolation and social well-being; community safety and tackling homophobia; training and personnel development; remaining independent; and raising awareness of older LGBT issues. It makes recommendations about continuing and extending Opening Doors as a Pan London project; and finding ways of developing closer links with care services working with older people aged 75+ who have dementia or are physically frail. Other recommendations refer to involving service users, recruitment and training, developing intergenerational links, and sharing examples of good practice in statutory services. (RH).
